{"id":5690,"date":"2026-03-11T17:39:42","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marketsfortress.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/11\/oil-hits-100-per-barrel-for-first-time-since-july-2022\/"},"modified":"2026-03-11T17:39:42","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T17:39:42","slug":"oil-hits-100-per-barrel-for-first-time-since-july-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marketsfortress.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/11\/oil-hits-100-per-barrel-for-first-time-since-july-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Oil hits $100 per barrel for first time since July 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-87d81d\" class=\"body-graf\">The price of oil surged past $100 on Sunday for the first time since July 2022 as the ripple effects from the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran continued to hit global markets. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3c9e74\" class=\"body-graf\">U.S. crude oil futures rose more than 25%, at one point reaching nearly $115 per barrel, while Brent, the international benchmark, jumped more than 20%, to $110 per barrel.<\/p>\n<div id=\"taboolaReadMoreBelow\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"anchor-d7e568\" class=\"body-graf\">In early trading Monday morning both indexes had fallen back slightly. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4632e5\" class=\"body-graf\">In addition to oil\u2019s rise, S&amp;P 500 futures plunged 2.3%, Dow futures plummeted more than 1,000 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures slid 2.7%, indicating U.S. stocks were poised to continue last week&#8217;s descent.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b528f3\" class=\"body-graf\">Oil&#8217;s remarkable jump came even despite a record 35% rise last week. In addition to surging oil prices, U.S. retail gas prices also soared to a national average of more than $3.45 per gallon.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d479eb\" class=\"body-graf\">The last time oil and gas prices surged to such levels was immediately after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"styles_inlineImage__FvnTh styles_medium__MEKii\" id=\"anchor-57b7a6\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2026-03\/260308-strait-hormuz-ww-1840-7acadc.jpg\" alt=\"Four ships are partially obscured by fog.\" height=\"1666\" width=\"2500\"><figcaption class=\"caption styles_caption__TCewG\" data-testid=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__container\" data-testid=\"caption__container\">Cargo ships and tankers in the Strait of Hormuz near Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, on Feb. 25. <\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Giuseppe Cacace \/ AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"anchor-238a6e\" class=\"body-graf\">Selling was not constrained to U.S. markets. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8fbdfd\" class=\"body-graf\">South Korea\u2019s Kospi index closed down almost 6% early Monday, while Japan\u2019s Nikkei 225 finished 5.2% lower. Australia\u2019s ASX 200 pared earlier losses to close down 2.85%, while Chinese markets had smaller losses. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d77910\" class=\"body-graf\">European futures also pointed to sharply lower trading. Germany&#8217;s DAX index was set to tumble more than 3.3%, the U.K.&#8217;s FTSE 100 was poised to drop 2%<strong> <\/strong>and the pan-European benchmark Stoxx 600 fell more than 2% in early trading to reach its lowest point in two months.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2047ba\" class=\"body-graf\">The war continues to hit oil infrastructure and push refiners to cut production. Kuwait\u2019s state oil company said it was trimming output, while the United Arab Emirates\u2019 state-run oil company said it was \u201cmanaging\u201d some output, hinting at possible production cuts. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b0e984\" class=\"body-graf\">Kuwait and the UAE both rank in the top five oil-producing countries in OPEC. Iraq, the No. 2 OPEC oil producer, already cut output significantly last week,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-03-08\/iraq-oil-output-plunges-about-60-as-iran-war-blocks-tankers\" target=\"_blank\"> according to multiple reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9993dd\" class=\"body-graf\">The Strait of Hormuz, off southern Iran, remains essentially impassible for most oil and liquefied natural gas tankers as they try to reach the global market.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d20695\" class=\"body-graf\">Every $1 that crude oil futures rise typically correlates to about a 2.5-cent rise in retail gasoline prices.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-32787f\" class=\"body-graf\">Consumers have already begun seeing increased prices at their local gas stations, and at least one analyst predicts prices will rise further. &#8220;I now estimate the chance of the national average reaching $4\/gal in the next month is now 80%,&#8221; GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GasBuddyGuy\/status\/2030769059562704964\" target=\"_blank\">said on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-43427f\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GasBuddyGuy\/status\/2030770489753207207\" target=\"_blank\">De Haan added<\/a> that he saw an 85% chance of diesel fuel hitting $5 per gallon in the next week.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e481bb\" class=\"body-graf\">This year, the price of U.S. crude oil has skyrocketed more than 80% as the Trump administration ramped up its rhetoric against Iran&#8217;s regime, even before it struck the country and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/iran\/live-blog\/israel-iran-live-updates-rcna261099\" target=\"_blank\">killed its supreme leader<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-658b09\" class=\"body-graf\">President Donald Trump has repeatedly rebuffed concerns about the rising price of oil and gas since the war began, telling Reuters on Friday that &#8220;I don&#8217;t have any concern about it&#8221; and adding that prices will &#8220;drop very rapidly when this is over, and if they rise, they rise, but this is far more important than having gasoline prices go up a little bit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-51d08b\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116196014942465383\" target=\"_blank\">said Sunday on Truth Social <\/a>that spiking prices were &#8220;a very small price to pay for U.S.A., and World, Safety and Peace.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-143fa8\" class=\"body-graf\">On Sunday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., suggested that the administration should tap the national strategic petroleum reserve. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f89e27\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe Strategic Petroleum Reserve exists for moments exactly like this,\u201d Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/iran\/live-blog\/live-updates-iran-president-must-respond-attacks-strikes-hit-rcna262269#rcrd103540\" target=\"_blank\">said in a written statement<\/a>. &#8220;When wars and global crises disrupt energy markets, the United States has the ability to act, but President Trump and his administration are refusing to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d9e96f\" class=\"body-graf\">On Friday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration was working with U.S. Central Command to try to get ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz soon.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b7d305\" class=\"body-graf\">The strait, a key artery for oil and liquefied natural gas to get to the global market, has been essentially shut since the U.S. and Israel first struck Iran on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7cea0a\" class=\"body-graf\">Still, Bessent said, it might take another &#8220;week or two weeks&#8221; to get ships moving through the waterway again as normal, &#8220;but we are on track to get this solved.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e84857\" class=\"body-graf\">Bessent also said in the interview on Fox Business Network that the Treasury Department might &#8220;unsanction&#8221; Russian oil to &#8220;create supply&#8221; and ease prices in the meantime. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-67dfb7\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">Interior Secretary Doug Burgum echoed Bessent,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6390591712112\" target=\"_blank\"> saying Sunday on Fox News<\/a> that it might be &#8220;weeks&#8221; before ships are passing through the Strait of Hormuz again.
