{"id":5314,"date":"2026-02-07T08:55:57","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T08:55:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marketsfortress.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/07\/brad-karp-resigns-as-paul-weiss-chair-amid-epstein-files-fallout\/"},"modified":"2026-02-07T08:55:57","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T08:55:57","slug":"brad-karp-resigns-as-paul-weiss-chair-amid-epstein-files-fallout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marketsfortress.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/07\/brad-karp-resigns-as-paul-weiss-chair-amid-epstein-files-fallout\/","title":{"rendered":"Brad Karp resigns as Paul Weiss chair amid Epstein files fallout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-696ee5\" class=\"body-graf\">Brad Karp, the chairman of the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton &amp; Garrison, resigned Wednesday after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/doj-releases-new-trove-long-awaited-epstein-files-rcna256714\" target=\"_blank\">most recent batch of Epstein files<\/a> released by the Justice Department included correspondence between him and Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a1a951\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;Recent reporting has created a distraction and has placed a focus on me that is not in the best interests of the firm,&#8221; Karp said in a statement released by the firm, which said his resignation was effective immediately. <\/p>\n<div id=\"taboolaReadMoreBelow\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"anchor-4e98ed\" class=\"body-graf\">Paul Weiss, as the firm is commonly known in corporate circles, is one of the most prestigious and high-powered law firms in the country. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5f3eac\" class=\"body-graf\">Karp had chaired the firm since 2008 and has spent his entire 40-year career there. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-070172\" class=\"body-graf\">Paul Weiss indicated that Karp was not leaving the firm entirely. \u201cMr. Karp will continue to focus his full-time attention to client service at the firm,\u201d its statement said. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f978ef\" class=\"body-graf\">Documents released Friday and posted to the Justice Department&#8217;s website show dozens of email exchanges between Karp and Epstein or Karp and Epstein&#8217;s assistant spanning multiple years, including 2015 through 2019. The emails were about a variety of topics.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c75059\" class=\"body-graf\">Epstein <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/justice-department-opens-probe-jeffrey-epstein-s-plea-deal-n968551\" target=\"_blank\">pleaded guilty<\/a> to state charges in Florida in 2008.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6e10f5\" class=\"body-graf\">Some of the emails show that Karp planned to take meetings with Epstein at his infamous New York City townhouse.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-86e7be\" class=\"body-graf\">The documents also showed Karp helping Epstein with his plea deal on sex trafficking charges. &#8220;The draft motion is in great shape,&#8221; Karp says in an email sent in March 2019. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-73e7c4\" class=\"body-graf\">Another exchange in 2015 shows Karp writing &#8220;you&#8217;re amazing&#8221; to Epstein directly after he describes &#8220;an evening I&#8217;ll never forget.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-12aa48\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;It was truly &#8216;once in a lifetime&#8217; in every way,&#8221; Karp says of the evening. &#8220;You are an extraordinary host.&#8221; More details about the dinner were not immediately clear. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7f4961\" class=\"body-graf\">In 2016, Karp wrote to ask Epstein whether he could help his son, whom he described as an up-and-coming filmmaker, secure work &#8220;in any capacity, with Woody [Allen].&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"styles_inlineImage__FvnTh styles_medium__MEKii\" id=\"anchor-353e95\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2026-02\/260204-paul-weiss-nyc-ww-2132-9fcd97.jpg\" alt=\"Manhattan skyscrapers seen from street level on a rainy day.\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\"><figcaption class=\"caption styles_caption__TCewG\" data-testid=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__container\" data-testid=\"caption__container\">The headquarters of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton &amp; Garrison in New York. The firm has represented some of the most notable companies in corporate America. <\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Melissa Bender \/ AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"anchor-b39b6b\" class=\"body-graf\">Paul Weiss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e12add1a-56ab-41b9-8288-f8df81ab57f1\" target=\"_blank\">has said<\/a> the firm and Karp never represented Epstein. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9eb154\" class=\"body-graf\">Karp said this week that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/02\/business\/karp-epstein-paul-weiss.html\" target=\"_blank\">regretted his interactions<\/a> with Epstein. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2ee4b2\" class=\"body-graf\">The exchanges were not the only issue facing Karp. Last year, Karp <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/legal-community-shaken-powerful-law-firm-paul-weiss-trump-rcna197490\" target=\"_blank\">signed an agreement<\/a> with the White House that committed the firm to provide $40 million worth of pro bono legal services to causes backed by President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-851fbe\" class=\"body-graf\">The agreement faced fierce blowback from the corporate and legal communities. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-34be8d\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump eventually rescinded the executive order that led to the deal.  <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fd31d7\" class=\"body-graf\">Scott Barshay, a corporate lawyer at the firm, will replace Karp as chairman. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3b6f39\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">Paul Weiss has represented some of the most notable companies in corporate America, from Exxon Mobil to Facebook owner Meta Platforms.
