Family members can then contribute up to $5,000 per year, with the funds available to the child once they turn 18.<\/p>\n<div id=\"taboolaReadMoreBelow\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"anchor-5a8257\" class=\"body-graf\">Parents can also set up Trump Accounts for children under 18 who were born before 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Trump-Accounts-Give-the-Next-Generation-a-Jump-Start-on-Saving.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to the White House, but they will not receive the $1,000 in starter cash. On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that \u201cdozens of major employers\u201d have pledged to donate to the program for their employees\u2019 children, able to contribute up to $2,500 per employee per year. They include Uber, Intel, Nvidia, Hearst and others, as well as Comcast, the parent company of NBC News.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c15824\" class=\"body-graf\">Bessent said the accounts are \u201cpart of the president\u2019s plan on American families and giving them a stake in this great economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-130f40\" class=\"body-graf\">The provision was tucked into Trump\u2019s mega tax bill last year without caps on income or other requirements. \u201cWe want everyone to be able to participate,\u201d Bessent said, adding that philanthropists, including Michael and Susan Dell, will contribute an additional $250 for families in zip codes where the median income is below $150,000. \u201cWe think we\u2019re going to have up to 20 states\u201d contribute to the program as well, Bessent said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bccd2a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cEveryone with a child who is under 18 should open an account,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4388c1\" class=\"body-graf\">In a wide-ranging interview with NBC News, Bessent touted \u201ca great economy,\u201d but warned Congress to fund the government ahead of a looming cliff on Friday. \u201cThe government shutdown will hurt the economy,\u201d Bessent said. \u201cI don\u2019t believe that we should shut down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-46550a\" class=\"body-graf\">After Border Patrol agents shot and killed a second protester in Minneapolis this month, many Democrats on Capitol Hill said they would not fund the Department of Homeland Security unless Republicans agree to reforms.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cd03a1\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cPresident Trump,\u201d Bessent said, \u201chas been in contact with Republican leadership. He\u2019s been in contact with some of the Democratic leadership\u201d to find a path forward.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ff4846\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump on Tuesday said he will announce a new pick to lead the Federal Reserve \u201csoon,\u201d after his administration subpoenaed Chairman Jerome Powell in a criminal probe, alleging Powell mismanaged funds for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/economy\/25-billion-renovation-center-dojs-criminal-investigation-federal-reser-rcna253540\" target=\"_blank\">$2.5 billion renovation<\/a> of the Fed\u2019s Washington headquarters. The unprecedented move, criticized by some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/republican-lawmakers-speak-justice-departments-federal-reserve-investi-rcna253619\" target=\"_blank\">Republicans and privately by Bessent himself<\/a>, capped off a yearslong public feud between Trump and Powell, with the White House attempting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/economy\/fed-likely-hold-interest-rates-steady-powell-defies-trump-rcna256012\" target=\"_blank\">pressure the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-54cf4e\" class=\"body-graf\">Bessent said he believes the Federal Reserve is independent. \u201cBeing independent doesn\u2019t mean no accountability, so we do have these big cost overruns,\u201d he told NBC News on Wednesday. \u201cSo, you know, I think some accountability will help their independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a781f3\" class=\"body-graf\">Powell\u2019s term as chair ends in May.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fe9c94\" class=\"body-graf\">On Venezuela, Bessent said his agency is \u201clooking case by case\u201d at winding down sanctions placed on oil in that country after the U.S. removed leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2880d4\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">\u201cThings have been going very well with the Venezuelan leadership,\u201d he said. \u201cI believe that we will start opening up or de-sanctioning a lot of the oil for the American oil companies first. And again, things are moving forward at a good pace. The government is deliberately releasing political prisoners. So the relationship between the U.S. and the current Venezuelan government is good.
