{"id":4875,"date":"2026-01-07T10:58:26","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T10:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/marketsfortress.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/07\/u-s-will-look-to-tap-venezuelan-oil-reserves-trump-says\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T10:58:26","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T10:58:26","slug":"u-s-will-look-to-tap-venezuelan-oil-reserves-trump-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marketsfortress.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/07\/u-s-will-look-to-tap-venezuelan-oil-reserves-trump-says\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. will look to tap Venezuelan oil reserves, Trump says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-cd5631\" class=\"body-graf\">President Donald Trump said Saturday that the removal of Venezuela President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro from power will open the door to the country\u2019s vast oil reserves, a move that has the potential to reshape the global energy market.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bbe6a8\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure and start making money for the country,\u201d Trump said in a public address.<\/p>\n<div id=\"taboolaReadMoreBelow\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"anchor-e4ed6f\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThey were pumping almost nothing by comparison to what they could have been,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b60363\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump\u2019s comments came just hours after a stunning raid early Saturday in which U.S. armed forces and law enforcement captured Maduro and struck parts of the capital, Caracas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-828e95\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/live-blog\/venezuela-maduro-trump-live-updates-rcna252101\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Follow live coverage<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9f1084\" class=\"body-graf\">Venezuela\u2019s vast oil reserves are the largest in the world, likely the equivalent of about 300 billion barrels, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.energyinst.org\/search\/record?id=58930\" target=\"_blank\">Energy Institute<\/a>, a research firm. Its reserves top those of even the No. 1 OPEC oil-producing country, Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<section id=\"anchor-ac45a0\" class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\" data-testid=\"embed-widget\">\n<div data-testid=\"iframely-wrapper\" class=\"embed-widget__use-presentation embed-widget__iframely-datawrapper\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"iframely-datawrapper-dwcdn iframely-app iframely-embed\">\n<div class=\"iframely-responsive\" style=\"height: 527px;padding-bottom: 0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p id=\"anchor-b111fb\" class=\"body-graf\">But ramping up oil production would likely require years of work and sizable investments to modernize its industry, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, something that will also require a certain level of political stability. Trump said in his public address that the U.S. would \u201crun\u201d Venezuela for the time being but did not specify who would be involved or how.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9b405b\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe built Venezuela\u2019s oil industry with American talent, drive, skill, and the socialist regime stole it from us,\u201d Trump asserted. \u201cThis constituted one of the largest thefts of American property in the history of our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-982925\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump said the embargo he imposed on Venezuela oil remains \u201cin full effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-915bc2\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThey stole our oil,\u201d he added. \u201cThey took it over like it was nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7a2a48\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be selling large amounts of oil to other countries,\u201d Trump said when he was asked how controlling Venezuela\u2019s energy supply could impact relations with China, Russia and Iran. \u201cWe\u2019re in the oil business. We\u2019re going to sell it to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cae545\" class=\"body-graf\">Venezuela has for decades enjoyed a level of economic success thanks to its oil, which it supplies to a variety of trading partners. Currently, China is Venezuela\u2019s top oil customer, according to analysts, but due to the secretive nature of some of those exports exact data is hard to come by.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3a2e17\" class=\"body-graf\">Any U.S. effort to gain access to Venezuela\u2019s oil could also further inflame tensions with China, which issued a terse condemnation of Maduro\u2019s removal.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-59af8f\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cSuch hegemonic acts of the U.S. seriously violate international law and Venezuela\u2019s sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region,\u201d China\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MFA_China\/status\/2007460580089868702\" target=\"_blank\">said Saturday<\/a>. \u201cChina firmly opposes it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b6c711\" class=\"body-graf\">Chevron is the only U.S. oil company that operates in Venezuela, under a limited license issued to it by the Trump administration. Under a more involved plan like one envisioned by Trump, more companies would likely need to enter the country.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-52d104\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cChevron remains focused on the safety and wellbeing of our employees, as well as the integrity of our assets,\u201d a company spokesperson said on Saturday morning. \u201cWe continue to operate in full compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-42abab\" class=\"body-graf\">ConocoPhillips said it was &#8220;monitoring developments in Venezuela and their potential implications for global energy supply and stability&#8221; but added that it would be &#8220;premature to speculate on any future business activities or investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b5e33b\" class=\"body-graf\">ExxonMobil and other international oil giants did not respond to questions outside of normal business hours Saturday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"styles_inlineImage__FvnTh styles_medium__MEKii\" id=\"anchor-82bc28\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2026-01\/260103-venzuela-strikes-ch-1104-26b3bb.jpg\" alt=\"Strikes in Venezuela.\" height=\"1714\" width=\"2500\"><figcaption class=\"caption styles_caption__TCewG\" data-testid=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__container\" data-testid=\"caption__container\">Fire at Fuerte Tiuna, Venezuela&#8217;s largest military complex after a series of explosions in Caracas on Saturday.<\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"anchor-9de812\" class=\"body-graf\">Major U.S. involvement in Venezuela\u2019s oil sector could be transformational for the industry and energy markets, although establishing the infrastructure to drill, store and export that oil could take years to materialize.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a830bb\" class=\"body-graf\">Venezuela\u2019s vast reserves are highly concentrated in one part of the country. Tapping that supply would be technically feasible but likely very costly due to years of decay that the country\u2019s energy infrastructure has suffered due to an economy weakened by strict U.S. sanctions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-454764\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cMost of Venezuela\u2019s proven oil reserves are extra-heavy crude oil,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/international\/analysis\/country\/VEN\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b22872\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe extraction of extra-heavy crude oil requires a higher level of technical expertise, which international oil companies possess but their involvement has been limited by international sanctions,\u201d the agency said. \u201cFurthermore, budgetary constraints at Venezuela\u2019s state oil company PDVSA and a lack of qualified technical personnel and foreign direct investment have all hampered Venezuela\u2019s oil and natural gas development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ce1141\" class=\"body-graf\">Due to those sanctions and budget restraints, PDVSA is still the largest source of revenue for the Maduro government.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1357e1\" class=\"body-graf\">The infrastructure is decades old, though, made more difficult by the extra-heavy crude oil. The EIA estimates that many of Venezuela\u2019s oil pipelines are more than 50 years old.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-93ba00\" class=\"body-graf\">Restoring the country\u2019s oil production to just 1990s levels would require more than $8 billion in investments, EIA said, citing PDVSA estimates.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-70d0cf\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;The bones of a terrific oil industry are certainly there,&#8221; longtime oil industry analyst John Kilduff told NBC News.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bc9a53\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;There could be a small bump in their output over the next six months,&#8221; Kilduff added, noting that the extra production could help with the recent downward trajectory in gas prices for consumers. &#8220;So yes, U.S. consumers could see a further decrease at the pump on top of what they&#8217;ve already been seeing over the past several months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e40ee0\" class=\"body-graf\">&#8220;Venezuela oil is of a special grade. It&#8217;s very heavy and sour, particularly well-suited for U.S. Gulf Coast oil refineries,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4b2469\" class=\"body-graf\">For now, the market impact is unclear.
