In the U.S., its broadcast was postponed by CBS under its new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss.<\/p>\n<div id=\"taboolaReadMoreBelow\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"anchor-2f7670\" class=\"body-graf\">It includes interviews from people who were deported from the U.S. to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/venezuelan-rare-major-surgery-was-deported-el-salvador-prison-family-n-rcna215416\" target=\"_blank\"> Center for the Confinement of Terrorism<\/a>, or CECOT, under the Trump administration. The interviewees described torture and physical and sexual abuse at the complex.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-83e976\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWhen we got there, the CECOT director was talking to us. I\u2019ll make sure you never leave,\u2019\u201d said Munoz, who the report noted has since been released.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-77b199\" class=\"body-graf\">He told the program that he was awaiting a decision on his asylum claim when he was deported to CECOT this year \u2014 one of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/venezuelans-cecot-el-salvador-returned-abuse-rcna220924\" target=\"_blank\"> 252 Venezuelans sent there in March and April<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-97592f\" class=\"body-graf\">Neither CBS nor Global Television Network immediately responded to requests for comment late Monday and early Tuesday about how the report ended up being shown in Canada while being pulled from air in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0037f1\" class=\"body-graf\">The segment featured a clip of President Donald Trump describing El Salvador\u2019s prisons as \u201cgreat facilities, very strong facilities, and they don\u2019t play games,\u201d while seated next to Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/president-el-salvador-wont-return-deported-man-kilmar-abrego-garcia-rcna201136\" target=\"_blank\"> during a meeting at the White House earlier this year<\/a>. It also showed Homeland Security Secretary<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/homeland-security-secretary-noem-visits-el-salvador-prison-deported-ve-rcna198317\" target=\"_blank\"> Kristi Noem\u2019s visit to CECOT<\/a> in March in which she thanked Bukele and El Salvador for their \u201cpartnership\u201d with the U.S. to incarcerate what she called \u201cterrorists\u201d at the facility.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5c3d90\" class=\"body-graf\">Neither the White House nor the Department of Homeland Security immediately responded outside regular business hours early Tuesday to emailed requests for comment about the contents of the segment that aired in Canada. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9fe9cc\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cInside CECOT\u201d was reported<strong> <\/strong>by correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, who was critical of the decision to delay the segment\u2019s broadcast. In a note to colleagues seen by NBC News, she accused the network of pulling the segment for \u201cpolitical\u201d reasons.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bf7ea9\" class=\"body-graf\">In the note, she said it was pulled because the Trump administration refused requests for comment \u2014 a standard that she said, if adopted, would amount a government \u201ckill switch\u201d to stop publication of a story.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2b490d\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cOur story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices,\u201d Alfonsi wrote in the note.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9bcb9f\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt is factually correct. Paramount Skydance, which owns CBS,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/business-news\/paramount-cbs-news-acquires-free-press-bari-weiss-rcna220672\" target=\"_blank\"> acquired<strong> <\/strong>The Free Press and hired Weiss as editor-in-chief of CBS News<\/a> in October.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0bbb32\" class=\"body-graf\">Critics at the time noted that Weiss had worked mainly as an opinion journalist and did not have experience in broadcast news.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-17f91e\" class=\"body-graf\">She resigned from The New York Times in 2020 after three years,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bariweiss.com\/resignation-letter\" target=\"_blank\"> writing that<\/a> there was an \u201cilliberal environment\u201d there and that \u201cMy own forays into Wrongthink have made me the subject of constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4bf5a0\" class=\"body-graf\">Among the critics of the decision to pull Sunday\u2019s \u201c60 Minutes\u201d segment were the free speech nonprofit PEN America and FCC Commissioner Anna M. Gomez, an appointee of former President Joe Biden<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/document\/gomez-editorial-interference-60-minutes\" target=\"_blank\"> who called it \u201cdeeply alarming.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a4e4af\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cCBS journalists, among the best in this country, appropriately made an outreach effort to get the government to weigh in on a deeply reported story out of El Salvador,\u201d Tim Richardson, journalism and disinformation program director at PEN America said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ab7411\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cPulling it back at the last minute because the government chose not to respond is an insult not only to the integrity of the journalists but to core principles of independent news gathering,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-88b8bf\" class=\"body-graf\">Weiss in a statement said that the piece was only held, which she said is not unusual.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-486df3\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cHolding stories that aren\u2019t ready for whatever reason \u2014 that they lack sufficient context, say, or that they are missing critical voices \u2014 happens every day in every newsroom. I look forward to airing this important piece when it\u2019s ready,\u201d Weiss said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-dc360d\" class=\"body-graf\">In an editorial call Monday morning, Weiss said that \u201cI held a &#8217;60 Minutes&#8217; story because it was not ready,\u201d according to a source.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8191ca\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWhile the story presented powerful testimony of torture at CECOT, it did not advance the ball \u2014 The Times and other outlets have previously done similar work,\u201d she said, according to that source.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-043ce0\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump ran on a platform of mass deportations, and his administration began<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/venezuelans-deported-el-salvador-detention-abuses-rcna197125\" target=\"_blank\"> deporting people to El Salvador and CECOT in March<\/a>, citing the previously rarely used Alien Enemies Act of 1798.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-970784\" class=\"body-graf\">Among those sent to CECOT was Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/new-documents-government-case-mistakenly-deported-abrego-garcia-gang-rcna201665\" target=\"_blank\"> mistakenly deported there<\/a> contrary to a judge\u2019s order, and who was subsequently returned to the U.S. and who was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/kilmar-abrego-garcia-released-ice-custody-judge-xinis-rcna237431\" target=\"_blank\"> ordered released from immigration custody on Dec. 11<\/a>.
