CBS News<\/a> pulled a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d report about the Trump administration sending detainees to a maximum security \u201cmega prison\u201d in El Salvador<\/a> just hours before its scheduled broadcast.<\/p>\n

The broadcaster said Sunday that the episode would be aired at a future date, a move that drew questions<\/a> about why it was postponed at such short notice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe broadcast lineup for tonight\u2019s edition of 60 Minutes has been updated,\u201d the show posted on social media just three hours before airtime. \u201cOur report \u2018Inside CECOT<\/a>\u2019 will air in a future broadcast.\u201d<\/p>\n

NBC News has contacted CBS for comment.<\/p>\n

In a statement to The New York Times<\/a>, CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss said, \u201cMy job is to make sure that all stories we publish are the best they can be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHolding stories that aren\u2019t ready for whatever reason\u2014that they lack sufficient context, say, or that they are missing critical voices\u2014happens every day in every newsroom,\u201d she added. \u201cI look forward to airing this important piece when it\u2019s ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

A preview of the story had been released and shown on air and was available online. <\/p>\n

According to those clips, it profiled detainees who were deported from the United States to El Salvador\u2019s notorious Center for the Confinement of Terrorism<\/a>, or CECOT.<\/p>\n

One clip showed correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi speaking about how these prisoners were \u201cshackled, paraded in front of cameras,\u201d and saying that they had endured \u201cfour months of hell\u201d at the facility.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration sent about 250 Venezuelan men to CECOT<\/a> in March and has accused them of being members of the Tren de Aragua gang. Many of the men and some of their families and attorneys have denied the claim.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the “60 Minutes” webpage promoting the report had been removed. Instead, it read: \u201cThe page cannot be found. The page may have been removed, had its name changed, or is just temporarily unavailable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alfonsi said the segment was pulled for \u201cpolitical\u201d reasons, according to a private note sent to CBS colleagues that was reported by the Times.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices,\u201d the Times reported Alfonsi wrote in the note, which it had obtained a copy of, the newspaper said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is factually correct. In my view, pulling it now, after every rigorous internal check has been met, is not an editorial decision, it is a political one,\u201d she said in the note, the Times reported.<\/p>\n

Asked for further comment by the newspaper Sunday evening, Alfonsi said: \u201cI refer all questions to Bari Weiss.\u201d<\/p>\n

It’s the latest in a string of controversies for CBS and its parent company, the newly formed Paramount Skydance.<\/p>\n

Last year, President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against Paramount, accusing \u201c60 Minutes\u201d of deceptively editing an interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. CBS denied the claim. Paramount settled Trump\u2019s lawsuit for $16 million.<\/p>\n

Skydance chief David Ellison<\/a> has sought to reshape the news business, appointing Weiss<\/a> \u2014 a television newcomer and prominent critic of liberal media \u2014 as editor in chief after acquiring her outlet, The Free Press.<\/p>\n

In seeking federal approval of the merger with Paramount, Skydance vowed to embrace \u201cdiverse viewpoints\u201d and represent \u201cthe varied ideological perspectives of American viewers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sunday’s decision drew criticism from some Democrats. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is happening to CBS is a terrible embarrassment and if executives think they can build shareholder value by avoiding journalism that might offend the Mad King they are about to learn a tough lesson,\u201d Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, said. The decision \u201cdoes merit an explanation right away. It\u2019s a pretty big deal to pull a story at the request of the White House,\u201d he wrote on X<\/a>. <\/p>\n
