President Donald Trump insulted a female reporter\u2019s appearance on Wednesday when he called The New York Times\u2019 Katie Rogers \u201cugly,\u201d marking the third time in recent weeks that the president has criticized a female reporter in personal terms.<\/p>\n
In a post<\/a> on Truth Social, the president called Rogers, \u201ca third rate reporter who is ugly, both inside and out,\u201d one day after Rogers and a male New York Times data reporter co-authored a piece<\/a> saying there were signs of Trump aging in office. In the post, Trump also disputed the accuracy of the story, writing, \u201cThey know this is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump did not mention the other reporter in his post and called the Times a \u201ccheap \u2018rag\u2019\u201d and \u201can \u2018enemy of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n A spokesperson for The New York Times stood by Rogers and her reporting, telling NBC News on Wednesday, \u201cThe Times\u2019 reporting is accurate and built on first-hand reporting of the facts. Name-calling and personal insults don\u2019t change that, nor will our journalists hesitate to cover this administration in the face of intimidation tactics like this.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cExpert and thorough reporters like Katie Rogers exemplify how an independent and free press helps the American people better understand their government and its leaders,\u201d the paper\u2019s spokesperson added.<\/p>\n That Truth Social post came over a week after the president criticized ABC News reporter Mary Bruce in the Oval Office after she asked him a question about the Jeffrey Epstein files during a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. <\/p>\n \u201cYou know, it\u2019s not the question that I mind. It\u2019s your attitude. I think you are a terrible reporter,\u201d Trump told Bruce, adding later that he thinks she\u2019s a \u201cterrible person\u201d and telling Bruce that ABC is a \u201ccrappy company.\u201d<\/p>\n Earlier in the meeting, Bruce had asked the president<\/a> and the Saudi crown prince about the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which U.S. intelligence in 2021<\/a> found was orchestrated by the crown prince and his associates. \u201cHe knew nothing about it and we can leave it at that,\u201d Trump responded.<\/p>\n He chided Bruce: \u201cYou don\u2019t have to embarrass our guests by asking a question like that.\u201d<\/p>\n Representatives for ABC News on Wednesday did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.<\/p>\n Just days before that, Trump responded to another question about Epstein on Air Force One from Bloomberg reporter Catherine Lucey by telling her: \u201cQuiet, piggy.\u201d<\/p>\n Asked about that comment last week, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Trump is \u201cfrank and open and honest\u201d and that\u2019s what voters like about him.<\/p>\n \u201cThe president is very frank and honest with everyone in this room. You\u2019ve all seen it yourself. You\u2019ve all experienced it yourselves. And I think it\u2019s one of the many reasons that the American people re-elected this president, because of his frankness,\u201d Leavitt told reporters. \u201cAnd he calls out fake news when he sees it. He gets frustrated with reporters when you lie about him, when you spread fake news about him and his administration.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI think the president being frank and open and honest to your faces rather than hiding behind your backs, is, frankly, a lot more respectful than what you saw in the last administration,\u201d the press secretary added.<\/p>\n On Wednesday, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said that the president’s comments over the last few weeks are not related to gender.<\/p>\n She told NBC News, “President Trump has never been politically correct, never holds back, and in large part, the American people re-elected him for his transparency. This has nothing to do with gender \u2014 it has everything to do with the fact that the President\u2019s and the public\u2019s trust in the media is at all time lows.\u201d<\/p>\n In a statement after the president\u2019s comment on Air Force One, a spokesperson for Bloomberg News told NBC News, \u201cOur White House journalists perform a vital public service, asking questions without fear or favor. We remain focused on reporting issues of public interest fairly and accurately.\u201d <\/p>\n Though the president has recently criticized a string of female reporters, he has criticized male journalists and politicians, too.<\/p>\n On Tuesday, while pardoning turkeys at the White House, Trump spoke out against Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker\u2019s efforts to block the deployment of National Guard troops in Chicago. He called the governor \u201ca low-IQ person\u201d and \u201ca fat slob.\u201d<\/p>\n The president added, \u201cI\u2019d like to lose a few pounds too, by the way, and I\u2019m not going to lose it on Thanksgiving.\u201d<\/p>\n In September, while late night host Jimmy Kimmel was suspended from ABC due to comments he made on air about Charlie Kirk\u2019s assassination, Trump repeatedly criticized him on social media, calling Kimmel a \u201cman with no talent\u201d and a \u201cbum.\u201d <\/p>\n The same month, he responded to a question from ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl about free speech, telling Karl in the Oval Office, \u201cJon, you\u2019re guilty. ABC is a terrible network, a very unfair network, and you should be ashamed of yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019re not a wonderful person.
