Here&#8217;s what to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-95e6c4\" class=\"body-graf\">The U.S. Department of Transportation is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/flight-reduction-shutdown-faa-rcna242231\" target=\"_blank\">ordering<\/a> airlines to begin reducing flight schedules at 40 \u201chigh traffic\u201d airports by 10%, as the government shutdown approaches a record-40th day.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f3b0e5\" class=\"body-graf\">Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the cuts are designed to &#8220;alleviate the pressure&#8221; on air traffic controllers who are now working without pay due to lapses in federal funding. <\/p>\n<div id=\"taboolaReadMoreBelow\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"anchor-79ef6f\" class=\"body-graf\">FAA administrator Bryan Bedford says the restrictions \u2014 which will begin Friday \u2014 are needed to maintain safety because \u201cfatigue\u201d is hitting air traffic controllers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0112d5\" class=\"body-graf\">Major carriers announced that they will begin implementing schedule changes in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0288a3\" class=\"body-graf\">But analysts caution that the situation remains subject to change, and stressed that airline ticket holders should check directly with carriers for the latest updates to their travel.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-18b97e\" class=\"body-graf\">So what happens if your flight is affected? <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6cfd0b\" class=\"body-graf\">Passengers will be eligible for refunds if their flight is cancelled due to the government shutdown and they choose not to accept a rebooked flight. Major carriers are required to automatically rebook passengers whose flights are canceled at no charge \u2014 or refund the airfare if the passenger decides not to accept the new flight.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-722b15\" class=\"body-graf\">Many major airlines are also waiving change fees and penalties for passengers who are looking to switch their flights on their own, though some carriers are applying limits. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c3f3db\" class=\"body-graf\">United Airlines has issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.united.com\/en\/us\/fly\/travel\/trip-planning\/travel-alerts.html#fly-waivers-7740\" target=\"_blank\">waiver<\/a> for select flights departing between Nov. 6 &#8211; 13, but said rebooked flights must be on United and must depart within a specific window that covers the six days on either side of the original travel date.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d1f54f\" class=\"body-graf\">The United waivers and refund policies will even apply to passengers who have non-refundable or basic-economy tickets.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2a1e00\" class=\"body-graf\">American Airlines&#8217; change-fee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com\/i18n\/travel-info\/travel-alerts.jsp#flightreduction\" target=\"_blank\">waiver<\/a> also applies to all fare levels for affected flights between Nov. 7 &#8211; 14, but only for passengers who are able to travel by Nov. 16.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Department of Transportation is ordering airlines to begin reducing flight schedules at 40 \u201chigh traffic\u201d airports by 10%, as the government shutdown approaches a record-40th day.
